Organizers Plan “Women’s Rally on Raleigh,” A Women’s March Anniversary Event

More than 1,000 Women and Allies Expected to Protest on January 20th

Raleigh, N.C.- Last January, more than 17,000 women and allies flooded downtown streets for the Women’s March on Raleigh to protest the inauguration of Donald Trump and the North Carolina General Assembly’s dismal record of stripping protections from vulnerable communities. This year, organizers are planning the “Women’s Rally on Raleigh: Women Leading the Resistance” to take place on January 20th at Halifax Mall from 9 am-Noon. The commemorative event will celebrate the fierce and uncompromising leadership and work undertaken by women throughout North Carolina to resist regressive policies and actions.

Pledging to defend and support communities under attack, the rally will fire up a diverse crowd with prominent speakers representing issues that impact women, including voter suppression, sexual assault, domestic violence, access to affordable quality healthcare, immigrant rights, Islamophobia, LGBTQ rights, public education and more. Anita Earls of the Southern Coalition for Social Justice is a confirmed speaker, as are MaryBe McMillan of the NC AFL-CIO, TV personality, activist and Equality NC Board Member Candis Cox, and Dr. Michelle Laws, longtime women's rights advocate, former Executive Director for the NC NAACP and associate minister at Union Baptist Church Durham. Entertainers, representatives from advocacy groups and food trucks will also be on hand.

Carly Jones, social justice advocate and Women Mobilize NC Programs Co-Chair reflects: “The past year presented a number of challenges for the movement, but women have persisted in their efforts to spearhead resistance to oppressive policies and enact change in their communities. We hope to lift up these efforts once again and connect people who want to get involved in social justice work. Now is the time for new energy and new female leaders.” Raleigh NOW President Gailya Paliga adds: “North Carolina’s women and allies have cultivated a creative and compassionate resistance to the administration’s attitudes and policies, and this rally will serve as a testament to the fact that the resistance is here to stay.”
